What started back in the mid nineties as an experiment fusing youth culture and social action has turned into a multi-faceted, multi-faced creature called Bassnectar. It is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginary. Bassnectar combines sound and force with weight while spanning the spectrum of sonic style, covering every genre imaginable, and smashing it all into a collision of wobbling, perverted basslines, hypnotic hide-and-seek adventures, and pretty much anything that strikes his fancy. He calls the end product “omnitempo maximalism,” which basically means no rules, no limitations, and no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange or the classic with the cutting edge.

Sound Tribe Sector 9 (abbreviated as STS9) is an instrumental band known for their live performances. The band’s genre-blending sound is based heavily on instrumental rock and electronic music crossed with elements of funk, jazz, drum and bass, psychedelia, and hip hop. Self-described as “post-rock dance music”. The band mixes standard live rock instrumentation with electronics, favoring group rhythm over individual solos. STS9 has released five studio albums, one remixed album, and one live DVD (Live As Time Changes) on their own label 1320 Records. As an independent artist, they have succeeded by using their live performance to conduct multiple concert tours and appear at music festivals. They have achieved significant niche popularity in a few areas of the country through frequent appearances, most notably in greater San Francisco Bay Area including Santa Cruz; the greater Denver area including Boulder; as well as Asheville, NC, and the greater Atlanta area including Athens, GA.

Invisible Heart

Invisible Heart is a track that I’ve been working on for some time now, and have just finished up. Its something you might not expect as it is a drum and bass track. Invisible Heart has some really big synth sounds as well as some guitar. One of the guitar parts I actually played myself, but all the lead guitar was programmed. The entire song was written/programmed and recorded with Pro Tools with Fruity Loops being Rewired to the host.

A benefit party to raise money for the local ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) www.aspca.org . There will also be free food (donate $10.00 for steak, chicken or tofu dinner!), free beer with $1.00 donation (unlimited refills all day), and mud wrestling for prizes. Music will be provided by Dj Shadowstarr and photography exhibit by Ted Bolha.

Though still a “young” event (this is only its second year, hence the 2.0), the One Self bash thrown by the united forces of Leone Entertainment and the aptly-named All I Do Is Party team carries with it such an army of awesome assets that it’s already one of the more hotly anticipated celebrations of the summer. Last year’s One Self sold out fast and everybody who attended realized they were on to something special, so this year’s should be treated with an equally feverish lust. The date is Friday, June 5th and the venue is the Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. There is extensive rooftop access so you can soak in the summer night sky and the sounds of a million magical mystery artists. It’s advised to score tickets while they are still scorable.
